Discount cards for varsity students in June




The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism will introduce discount cards for students at all institutions of higher learning (IPTS) before June this year.
Its minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the discount card was aimed at lightening the burden of students as a result of the hike in the prices of goods.
He said the ministry was now discussing with major merchants such as book and sports equipment shops, transportation companies and so on to enable the students enjoy discounts for their shopping.
"The ministry is targeting at least 10 merchants, now there are seven merchants involved. The ministry is expediting discussions with other merchants and we hope they can be concluded soon.
"The ministry is working with Bank Rakyat to issue the discount card which some students are designing now. We expect the discount card to be introduced before June," he told reporters here.
Meanwhile, Ismail said the ministry was also targeting for all public and private IPTs with cafeterias to join the 1Malaysia People's Menu (MR1M) programme by the end of the year.
He said there were 143 cafeterias at 40 public and private IPTs participating in the MR1M programme, which provides breakfast at RM2, lunch at RM4 in Peninsular Malaysia and RM2.50 and RM5 respectively in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.
"The ministry's target is for all IPTS to join the MR1M by the end of the year.
"My ministry and the Ministry of Higher Education are holding discussions to ensure the success of the programme.
"Priority is given to all 22 public IPTs nationwide. Private IPTs will be discussed following the establishment of several procedures," he said.
Ismail said there were now five IPTs which had started selling KRIM products.
